The Original Tone Setter.

After over four decades of unmatched leadership, musical brilliance, and sheer dedication, Richard Parkes has retired as Pipe Major of the world-renowned Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band. To say that Richard's legacy is extraordinary would be an understatement; he truly redefined the standard of excellence in competitive pipe bands and set a tone—musically and metaphorically—that resonates throughout the piping world.

From the moment he took up the reins of Field Marshal in 1981, Richard's vision was clear: to elevate the sound, precision, and overall artistry of the band. Under his guidance, Field Marshal Montgomery has become synonymous with perfection. Winning an astounding 71 major championships, including an unprecedented 13 World Pipe Band Championships, Richard has led his band to more victories than any other Pipe Major in history. But his contributions go far beyond the trophies.

Richard wasn’t just a leader—he was the original tone setter in every sense. His meticulous attention to detail in the tuning and balance of the band’s sound made Field Marshal famous for its clarity and brilliance on the competition field. In doing so, he influenced how bands across the globe approached their craft, raising the bar for what was possible. His pursuit of tonal perfection became the gold standard.

But setting the tone extended beyond music. Richard’s quiet confidence, humility, and unwavering commitment to his craft inspired generations of pipers and drummers. He built a culture within Field Marshal that emphasized teamwork, dedication, and a relentless drive for excellence. His leadership style fostered a sense of unity, not just within his band, but across the global piping community, as he remained approachable and generous with his time and expertise.

As he steps down, Richard leaves behind a band that will forever be shaped by his vision and spirit. His influence has carved a permanent mark on the piping world. Though his time as Pipe Major has come to an end, his legacy as the original tone setter—both in sound and leadership—will continue to resonate.

From all of us in the piping community: thank you, Richard. Your music, leadership, and legacy will echo for generations to come. Enjoy your well-earned retirement, knowing that you have inspired countless musicians and left an indelible mark on the world of pipe bands.
