Don’t lower your standards.

Recruiting and retaining members in a pipe band is an ongoing challenge for most organizations. It’s tempting to think that lowering standards—whether musically, in attendance, or commitment—might open the door for more recruits or keep existing members happy. However, the reality is that this approach can do more harm than good. In the long run, it weakens the quality and reputation of the band and drives away the very people you're hoping to attract: those who are passionate, dedicated, and committed to improvement.

The Myth of Lowering the Bar

The idea behind lowering standards is often that by making things easier or more relaxed, you’ll draw in more people. It’s a reasonable thought on the surface, but it overlooks one key aspect: people join and stay in organizations where they feel challenged, valued, and proud to be a part of something excellent. Lowering expectations can result in disengagement, as individuals who once felt motivated to improve and contribute meaningfully might start to feel that their efforts are wasted.


Maintaining Excellence Attracts Excellence

High standards signal that your band is serious about what it does. People who are committed to personal growth, who are driven by the pursuit of excellence, and who want to be part of something they can be proud of are more likely to be drawn to a band that maintains high expectations. These are the individuals who will show up for practice, put in the work, and contribute to the overall success of the band.


By maintaining excellence, you create an environment where current members are continuously motivated to improve. This creates a positive feedback loop: strong players challenge each other, creating a culture of growth that’s appealing to both current members and potential recruits.


How Lowering Standards Affects Retention

Lowering standards might provide a short-term solution to filling empty spots, but it doesn’t help with long-term retention. If you drop the bar too low, you risk alienating your most dedicated players—those who take pride in pushing themselves and the band to be the best. These members may lose interest if they feel the band is no longer striving for greatness.


Moreover, those who join under lower standards may not stick around long either. Without a strong sense of purpose or a challenge to rise to, new members might not feel the sense of accomplishment or pride that drives long-term commitment.


Striking the Balance

This doesn’t mean that your band should adopt an uncompromising, rigid attitude. It’s important to be welcoming and approachable. Flexibility in certain areas, like understanding life obligations or accommodating new learners, can coexist with maintaining high musical and performance standards. Setting clear expectations and offering support for members to meet them will keep your band both accessible and exceptional.


The Bigger Picture

At the end of the day, a band is more than just the sum of its parts. It’s a reflection of its values, its dedication to excellence, and its commitment to fostering an environment where members can grow. A band that values quality over quantity will always have a stronger foundation—and a more engaged and loyal membership—than one that sacrifices standards in the hope of filling ranks.


Lowering your standards is not the answer to recruitment and retention. Creating a culture of excellence, providing opportunities for growth, and setting high expectations are the keys to building a successful, sustainable pipe band for the future.
