On Saturday, April 18th competing members of Wake & District took to the field at Loch Norman kicking off the competition season. Several band members competed solo including Jacob Egan, Matthew Kent, Joe Harwell, Alan Armstrong and Dave Hamelin. We applaud them for competing solo and humbly representing the band in the solo endeavors. Congratulations to Joe Harwell for taking 2nd place in solo bass drumming at his first go at it!!!
The band also took the field in Grade 5 competition and we came in a very close second to the Charleston Police Pipe Band; within 2 points. Of the 4 judges we were rated 1st in drumming, 1st in ensemble, 1st by one of the piping judges and 4th by the other piping judge resulting in a 2nd place overall finish.
The last few weeks have been stressful for the entire competition group. Competition is not easy and is not always fun – but we should all be very proud with how well we did as a pipe section, drum corps and most importantly – together as a band. Thank you to everyone who stepped on the field and to those who came out to support the competing members (family, friends and fellow band members).
Our Pipe Major had his own little paparazzi at Loch Norman in the form of a UNC journalist who was with the band and will be doing a photo story on our mission to honor our fallen comrades – his photo story will be posted to the web in short order. All of the wonderful photos you see here were taken by Véronique McMillan and you can see all of her photos here.
