On Wednesday, May 4, 2011 hundreds gathered at Raleigh Durham International Airport to give a heroes’ welcome to Triangle veterans who participated in the Flight of Honor to Washington, D.C. About 200 North Carolina veterans from World War II and other wars visited the national memorials built in their honor on a daylong trip to the nation’s capital. Family members, tourists and Sen. Kay Hagan greeted the veterans when they arrived at the National WWII memorial Memorial and members of Wake & District were HONORED to lead the way by providing the stirring sounds of the pipes and drums.
Thank you to all the band members who came out to play – what a remarkable night – what an honor.
In the words of Ronald Reagan: “…Our young friends — yes, young friends, for in our hearts you will always be young, full of the love that is youth, love of life, love of joy, love of country — you fought for your country and for its safety and for the freedom of others with strength and courage. We love you for it. We honor you…”.
