A Magical Weekend with the Jimmy V Foundation
Wake & District was honored to participate at V Foundation for Cancer Research events this weekend. On Saturday, 25 August 2012 the band peformed at the Gala which took place in the grand ballroom of the Raleigh Convention Center. This elegant, black tie affair celebrated a year of achievements in cancer research by The V Foundation. This year the foundation recognized and honor 9/11 First Responders now battling cancer. On Sunday, 26 August 2012 our Pipe Major and Drum Sergeant played the “shotgun start” for the 19th Annual Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic held at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Centennial Campus at NC State University.
Throughout his life, Jim Valvano kept a list of things he wanted to do on note cards in his pocket. The last note card Pam Valvano pulled out of Jim’s sport coat pocket read, “find a cure for cancer.” Jim dreamed of an event that would raise significant funds for cancer research. Nineteen years ago, that dream became a reality in the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic. Wake & District is proud to support this magical weekend and the achievements in cancer research by The V Foundation.
Aw go on, have some tea…
It appears Jean and Seamus Russell are enjoying their Scotland/Ireland vacation – pausing for a photo at the rectory of the late Father Ted on Craggy Island. There’s always time for a nice cup of tea. Sure, didn’t the Lord himself pause for a nice cup of tea before giving himself up for the world. By all accounts to two are having a brilliant time across the pond. Enjoy the tea and we can’t wait to see you back in the circle!
FMM – WORLD CHAMPIONS
Wake & District would like to extend our congratulations to Pipe Major Richard Parkes MBE and the men and women of the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band who were crowned World Pipe Band Champions on 11 August 2012 in Glasgow - Scotland. We are so grateful and humble for our collective talents, hard work – and the opportunities we have to perform and grow; all the while sharing what we do with the world. The band’s website online in July of 2006 and has been an amazing collection of photos and details of the band’s journey. In February of 2012 we did a re-boot of our website which would not have been possible without the technical know-how and gracious assistance from band member >> DALE ROE >> whose knowledge of Word-Press allowed for the myriad of enhancements.
Since the re-boot we have had over 25,000 pge views!!! The new website is a work in progress and we invite you to continue to come back and visit the band online to see what’s new and how we continue integrate thisplatform to deliver information on our mission…
Fundraiser for WEE Caroline
On Sunday, August 5th the band was honored to participate at a fundraiser @ Tir Na nOg to help raise money for our friend and longtime band fan Caroline Parnin who recently broke her ankle requiring surgery. Caroline has no health insurance so she was not covered for the expenses which ensued; in addition to the growing medical bills she can’t work for at least a couple months and has no income coming in to make mortgage payments and the like. Thank you to all the band members and our those family members and friends who came out to support Caroline.
