Thank you to the six pipers from Wake & District for performing at the Raleigh Police Promotional Ceremony on July 25, 2008 – and a special thanks to Pipe Corporal Dave Hamelin for leading the group. The above photo includes (from left to right) Chris Mogenson, Skip Kirkwood, Dee New, Jerry Smith, Tony Crawford and Dave Hamelin. Both Chris Mogenson and Dee New are sporting two of the newest kilts purchased by the band!
Funeral Service for Bailey FF John Hillard Boykin, Jr were held on 7-19-08 at the Bailey Town Cemetery on Hwy 581N. He was president of EnviroLink, a Vol FF (Unit 819) w/ Bailey VFD, board member w/ NC WPCSOC, former Bailey Town Commissioner, former Mayor of Bailey, former Police Chief of Bailey, and served in the US Marine Corps. John passed away Thurs 7-17-08. Took about 155 pictures and posted 87. Piper Lloyd Johnson honored our fallen comrade by playing the bagpipes at the funeral service.
The band would like to congratulate the members of Raleigh Fire Department Recruit Academy 34 on their graduation on July 15, 2008. Our own Jason Lane was one of their instructors and the band had the honor to play at their graduation ceremony held at Fletcher Opera Theater in the building formerly known as Memorial Auditorium.
Congratulations to Alan Armstrong who placed 2nd at the 2008 Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in the Grade 2 piobaireachd contest. A photo of Alan donning his silver medal can be see above. Additional congratulations to Jason Wall’s daughter on competing in highland dance events. These events carry on and promote the annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games and Gathering of Scottish Clans, to foster and restore interest in traditional dancing, piping, drumming, athletic achievement, music and Gaelic culture, and to establish scholarship funds to assist students from Avery County High School to study at American colleges and universities. The band hopes to participate and compete in these games in 2009.
